SecureIQLab published its Cloud WAAP CyberRisk Validation Methodology v5.0 on March 12. It is the first independent testing methodology that validates AI-powered WAF and WAAP defenses using AI-powered attacks. Testing begins in March, with results expected before Black Hat USA in August.
What is new in version 5.0
The methodology adds three attack surfaces that no prior independent WAAP evaluation had covered: AI-assisted bots, API gateways, and LLM-integrated application stacks. Specific additions include AI-enhanced payloads across WAF and API testing, three types of AI-assisted bot attacks (Agentic AI, Dynamic Bots, AI Summarizer), and OWASP LLM Top 10 validation covering prompt injection and improper output handling.
API testing now spans five protocols: REST, SOAP, GraphQL, gRPC, and WebSocket. The methodology also validates Shadow, Zombie, and Orphan API endpoint discovery. In total, version 5.0 covers 7 test categories and 8 security efficacy threat categories across three pillars: Security Efficacy, Operational Efficacy, and Compliance Efficacy.
Who gets tested
SecureIQLab says up to 20 vendors are under consideration. The scope includes dedicated WAAP vendors, CDN/edge providers like Cloudflare, Akamai, and Fastly, hyperscale cloud platforms such as AWS WAF and Azure WAF, API security specialists, and application delivery platforms like F5 Advanced WAF and Imperva.
The testing is non-commissioned and funded entirely by SecureIQLab. The methodology is AMTSO-compliant and aligned to MITRE ATT&CK, OWASP Top 10 (2025), OWASP API Security Top 10 (2025), and OWASP LLM Top 10.
WAFplanet take
This is overdue. WAF vendors have been shipping AI-based detection and bot mitigation for years, but independent testing never caught up. Most published benchmarks still test against static payloads and scripted bots. If your WAF claims to stop AI-assisted attacks, it should be tested against AI-assisted attacks. Simple enough.
The inclusion of LLM security testing is particularly relevant. As more applications integrate LLMs behind WAF-protected endpoints, prompt injection becomes a WAF problem whether vendors like it or not. Products like open-appsec and Cloudflare have started shipping LLM-aware rules. Now there will be a standardized way to measure if they actually work.
The catch: vendor participation is voluntary. If a major WAAP provider skips this round, that absence will say more than any test score. Watch the participant list carefully when it drops.
